Do Not Report Internet Rumors

That is, if you are a mainstream news organization.
The Columbus Dispatch was recently burned by
reporting that guard Jamar Butler may be contemplating entering the NBA
Draft. This rumor was first floated on at
least two Ohio State messageboards on Monday
afternoon. I know because I read them while, um,
working. Fortunately, Jim Naveau of the Lima News cleaned up the
confusion today with direct quotes from
Jamar's dad dispelling the notion, while
scoffing at the origin:
Indeed.
"When the reporter from Columbus called, I said, ‘Where did you get this rumor?’ and he said, ‘Off the interent.’ I said, ‘You can say anything on the internet.’ ”
Indeed.
